National Academies emphasize importance of Space Policy

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine have released a new public report on National Security Space Defense and Protection. High-powered individuals in government and industry involved in space and national security collaborated under the supervision and support of the National Academies to recommend specific actions.

In particular, two themes identified include space policy and addressing threats to space assets. The report states that "There is an urgent need to create relevant national policies to guide the creation of responses to these threats; this includes educating the public so that it can understand and participate in potential solutions in whatever capacity makes sense." Further, "... there is an urgent need to address the increasing threat to vital U.S. space systems, a need that cannot wait until broader policy considerations have been fully developed."

Our work here at GT is directly addressing the latter, particularly with respect to our focus on real-time detection, tracking, and characterization efforts.
